Electronic logging devices are connected to engine control modules (ECM) via various diagnostic ports and synchronized with trucks/buses, driver apps, and the fleet manager portal. NTA ELD hardware is proven to be reliable, can be installed in minutes, and connected to most Android/IOS smartphones and tablets via Bluetooth or USB.
Electronic logging devices are everywhere these days. It can be overwhelming to make the initial decision about which company to go with. However, trucking companies and owner-operators can always switch to a better option if they are unsatisfied with their current ELD provider for any number of reasons:
Getting in touch with customer service should not be an ordeal. Trucking companies need to be able to reach their representatives when they need them the most. After all, many truckers work around the clock so the perfect ELD service should too. When customer service suffers, it is time for companies to seek a better alternative.
Having a DOT-approved ELD device is not the only thing that companies need to consider before signing up with a software company. Both fleet managers and drivers need to find an interface easy to use. This product is designed to eliminate many of the daily chores associated with organizing a trucking company. If the interface makes your daily tasks feel clunky and cumbersome, it is a sign that you need a better ELD solution.
When a bill for an electronic logging device usage finally arrives, the charges may be higher than anticipated. Unfortunately, pricing is not always transparent with many ELD companies. After the shock sets in, it is time to start searching for a new company that is more straightforward with the cost of doing business.
Whether you have 1 or 1000 vehicles, it is important to select the right technology partner from the start if you would like to grow your business and profits. Consider technology vendors that go above and beyond the standard ELD Mandate requirements, providing additional features that make fleet operations more efficient and successful.
4G/LTE GPS fleet tracking technology grants you the ability to accurately track each one of your trucks in real-time. Pinpointing the location of each truck can minimize the number of phone calls that must be made to determine arrival times or to make new assignments. This feature also stores historical data so that office staff can analyze routes and monitor driver performance.
Manual data entry is a thing of the past with the IFTA mileage reporting. This reduces the risk of human errors and allows companies to perform complex calculations much faster. With just one click, office managers can quickly identify the distance traveled by a jurisdiction.
Sending drivers on new jobs used to require multiple phone calls while dispatchers juggled the logistics. Modern dispatch automation technologies allow fleet managers and dispatchers to assign a new job within seconds. They can quickly identify the nearest driver, spot potential traffic issues, and other pertinent details. From the convenience of the office, a dispatcher can monitor the progress along the route and determine when the assignment is completed. Dispatch services increase efficiency and allow for an even better customer service experience.
NTA ELD is the clear winner when it comes to each of these categories. Our company is well-known for our outstanding customer service, our easy-to-use program, and our straightforward pricing. It is worth investigating what we could offer to your trucking company.

The electronic logging device legislation has been in the works for decades. Below are a few important dates in the regulation timeline.
Introduction of AOBRDs
1988
Rules were introduced which defined AOBRDs and standardized how they will be used in the trucking industry. Automatic On-Board Recording Devices are just like Electronic Logging Devices, but they are differentiated by a few details. For instance, AOBRDs are not required to connect to the truck’s engine, however, ELDs must be connected to the engine by law.
Attempted Hours of Service Reform
2000
The FMCSA attempted to reform Hours of Service rules to mandate the use of ELDs. This first attempt was to mandate Hours of Service tracking with the use of ELD devices but it was shot down by court order in 2004.
ELD Announcement
Apr. 5th, 2010
The second attempt was made to make the use of ELD devices mandatory. The Department of Transportation announced a rule in the Federal Register that allowed the FMCSA to order the use of ELDs for those motor vehicle carriers who had issues with non-compliance with the HOS legislation.
Congress Act
Jul. 6th, 2012
The US Congress passed the Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act (MAP-21 Act) which mandated the FMCSA to come up with a rule that will mandate the use of ELDs. They were also required to carry out a research study on how to best implement Electronic Logging Devices, and also address key concerns that surround the risk of Electronic Logging Devices being used to coerce or harass drivers.
Publication
Dec. 16, 2015
The final Electronic Logging Device mandate was issued by the FMCSA. This included guidelines for manufacturers on how to make compliant ELDs and the features that are required, provisions to safeguard the drivers from harassment, and rules on how to track Hours of Service while using an Electronic Logging Device.
General Compliance
Dec. 18, 2017
The date by which motor carriers were required to start using either an approved Electronic Logging Device, Automatic On-Board Recording Device, or Electronic On-Board Recorder.
Full Compliance
Dec. 16, 2019
Motor Vehicles currently equipped with an Automatic On-Board Recording Device or an Electronic On-Board Recorder must be upgraded/replaced by an Electronic Logging Device.
Compliance Updates
Apr. 1, 2020
Regular regulation updates are being published by DOT & FMCSA to ensure ELD compliance and enforcement.
